International Amver operation assists sailboat near Bermuda

The combined international assistance of a Canadian HAM radio operator, rescue officials in Halifax, Canada, U.S. Coast Guard personnel in Virginia and an Amver ship provided assistance to a sailboat in distress 291 miles southwest of Bermuda on Sunday, December 6, 2015.

U.S. Coast Guard officials received a report of a disabled 43-foot sailboat from Canadian HAM radio operator Nycole Gaudreaul on a voyage from Norfolk, Va. to the Virgin Islands. The sailboat, the Black Cat, stated they were beset by weather and diverting to Puerto Rico but they didn't think they had enough fuel to make the journey.

Canadian rescue personnel in Halifax had the sailboat on a communications schedule. Halifax rescue authorities coordinated with the Coast Guard to find assistance. Using an Amver Surface Picture (SURPIC), rescue authorities identified the 605-foot bulk carrier Federal Miramichi which was only 50 miles away from the last known position of the Black Cat.

The crew of the Federal Miramichi agreed to assist the sailboat, quickly changed course and located the sailboat. The crew of the Federal Miramichi transferred 100 gallons of fuel, checked to make sure an ill yachtsman was able to continue on the sailboat and then departed on it intended voyage.

The Black Cat required no further assistance. The sailboat crew maintained a communications schedule with Nycole the HAM radio operator and arrived safely in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

The Federal Miramici, on charter with FedNav Ltd in Montreal, Canada, enrolled in Amver on March 17, 2006 and earned two Amver participation awards.

VIDEO AVAILABLE: Amver cruise ship Carnival Glory rescues 16 Cuban migrants

The Amver participating cruise ship Carnival Glory rescued 16 Cuban migrants after they were spotted in a homemade raft 99 miles south of Key West, Fla. on Friday, December 11, 2015.

U.S. Coast Guard authorities in Key West, Fla. originally received notification from the cruise ship Independence of the Seas that migrants were spotted in a rustic vessel in need of distress but the Independence of the Seas was managing its own onboard medical issue and could not rescue the migrants. Instead, the 951-foot Carnival Glory coordinated with the Coast Guard and safely rescued the 16 migrants. The male survivors had no medical conditions and were later transferred to the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Richard Etheridge.

VIDEO AVAILABLE: Viking Supply Ship Saves Sailor and Cat near Alaska

An Amver participating supply ship rescued a French sailor and his cat from a disabled approximately 400 miles south of Cold Bay, Alaska October 20, 2015.

The Frenchman, aboard a 30-foot sailboat, departed Dutch Harbor, Alaska on October 13th and was sailing towards Vancouver when he encountered severe weather and lost his rudder and suffered rigging problems. The sailor activated his Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB) which alerted U.S. Coast Guard authorities in Alaska.

Rescue personnel from the Coast Guard 17th District launched an Air Station Kodiak C-130 rescue aircraft and directed the Coast Guard Cutter Munro to get underway from Dutch Harbor to assist the sailboat.

Two nearby Amver participants also assisted. The Shell vessel Polar Pioneer contacted the Tor Viking II, another Amver vessel,  and dispatched the Swedish flagged vessel to assist the yachtsman.

The Tor Viking II battled 40 knot winds and 20-foot seas but managed to safely rescue the sailor and his cat. The survivor and his cat are being transported to Oregon, the Tor Viking II's next port call.

The Tor Viking II, managed by Viking Supply Ships of Sweden, enrolled in Amver on May 23, 2007.

Greek Bulker Rescues Seven Fishermen Near the Philippines

The Amver participating bulk carrier Kavala Seas rescued seven fishermen from their overturned boat near the Philippines on October 10, 2015.

The Liberian flagged ship was contacted by a Philippine rescue aircraft on  Saturday, October 10th and directed to assist in the search for a boat in distress. The captain of the Kavala Seas agreed to divert and readied his crew for rescue operations.

In less than two hours from the initial notification, the 623-foot ship had arrived on the scene. "We found seven persons standing on top of a capsized small boat with additional fittings of bamboo booms," the captain of the ship reported in an email to the Amver center. The crew reported six adults and one minor. None of the survivors were injured and all safely boarded the Kavala Seas.

"We've started the engines and are proceeding to San Fernando, La Union, Philippines to disembark the survivors," the captain sent in another email. The ship was met by the Philippine Navy and the survivors were transferred.

The Kavala Seas, managed by Allseas Marine of Voula, Greece, enrolled in Amver on November 15, 2012. The ship earned three Amver participation awards.

Two Amver Ships Help Rescue 12 Sailors North of Haiti

Two Amver ships assisted the U.S. Coast Guard rescue 12 seafarers who abandoned their sinking 212-foot cargo ship beset by heavy weather from Hurricane Joaquin Thursday evening after their ship began taking on water 51 miles north of Haiti.

A Bolivian-flagged cargo ship activated their Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB) after it began taking on water. "We've lost engines, are listing 30 degrees to port and had two cargo booms break loose...", the crew reported in an email to rescue authorities.

Coast Guard authorities in Miami launched a rescue helicopter and diverted the Coast Guard Cutter Northland along with querying the Amver system and diverting the timber carrier Falcon Arrow and the Ro-Ro Cronus Leader.

The two Amver ships arrived on scene and battled 30-knot winds and waves greater than 15 feet to provide a lee for the 12 crewmen in a life raft while the helicopter began hoisting the survivors and transporting them to shore. All 12 mariners were safely rescued and transported by helicopter to the Bahamas.

The Cronus Leader, managed by NYK Lines, enrolled in Amver on November 30, 2008 and earned six Amver participation awards. The Falcon Arrow, managed by GearBulk, enrolled in Amver on January 1, 1987 and has earned 25 Amver participation awards.

Amver ship saves two in Pacific rescue

The Amver participating bulk carrier Nord Voyager rescued two sailors from the disabled sailboat Sailfish approximately 670 miles south west of the Galapagos Islands on Monday, June 15, 2015.

U.S. Coast Guard rescue personnel in Alameda, Calf. received a telephone call from a family member of two sailors reporting their boat was demasted and in distress. Within minutes of receiving the phone call, rescue personnel also received a 406 MHz Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB) alert for the same location. Coast Guard authorities immediately queried the Amver system and located the Panamanian flagged bulk carrier Nord Voyager which was only 130 miles away from the sailboat.

The crew of the disabled sailboat maintained two hour communications with rescue personnel. The master of the Sailfish also released his mas and boom from the boat to increase stability. The crew of the sailboat reported the on scene weather was 12 knot winds with eight foot southerly swells and clear skies.

The Sailfish crew members were encouraged to take turns sleeping while the 620-foot Amver ship made best speed to their location. Once in the area the crew of the Nord Voyager were able to safely embark the two survivors without injury. The sailboat was marked and left adrift. The two survivors will remain aboard the Panamanian flagged ship until it reaches its next port in Vitoria, Brazil on July 3, 2015.

The Nord Voyager, managed by IMECS of Japan, enrolled in Amver on March 25, 2012 and has earned one Amver participation award.

Maine Maritime Academy training ship saves sailor

The Amver participating Maine Maritime Academy training ship State of Maine rescued a lone sailor after his sailboat began taking on water 520 miles southeast of Halifax, Canada on Wednesday, June 10, 2015.

U.S. Coast Guard rescue authorities in Boston, Mass. received an alert from a satellite provider stating "Broaching, taking on water in heavy seas. Hove to!". The Coast Guard issued an urgent marine broadcast to all available ships and queried the Amver system to see what commercial ships might be near the stricken yachtsman. Rescue authorities also launched a search and rescue aircraft from Canada and Coast Guard Air station Elizabeth City.

The  Training Ship State of Maine, a 500-foot training vessel from the Maine Maritime Academy, was only 29 miles away from the distress location and agreed to divert and assist the sailor.

The sailor, aboard the sailing vessel Prodigal, was on a voyage from South Carolina to Ireland when he encountered rough weather which damaged his sailboat.

According to a press release from the Maine Maritime Academy the sailboat was damaged but able to come alongside the training ship. Cadets aboard the ship readied rescue equipment, fast rescue boats and rigged a jacob's ladder to allow the sailor to board the ship. Within a few hours of the initial notification the survivor was safely aboard the training ship, had called his family and was enjoying a hot meal.

The State of Maine enrolled in Amver on June 24, 1998. The Maine Maritime Academy's Commandant of Midshipmen, Nate Gandy, said is best in the school's press release, "Students today got a first-hand look at a near disaster." Thankfully all the pieces of a successful rescue were in place. A robust search and rescue system that includes Amver, a well prepared sailor and seafarers willing to risk life and profit so that no call for help goes unanswered.

Amver tanker saves 7 in Pacific rescue

The Amver participating tanker Pride (ex British Pride) rescued seven sailors from their disabled speedboat approximately 230 miles west of El Salvador on Friday, May 8, 2015.

Rescue personnel at U.S. Coast Guard Sector San Diego were notified by the 1,000-foot tanker they had encountered a 25-foot speedboat requesting water and fuel. The Pride did not have gasoline on board to transfer to the distress vessel but did provide water, food and some diesel fuel. The captain of the Pride then notified rescue personnel the sailors on the small boat were requesting additional assistance.

Once the intentions of the sailors was determined the crew of the Pride safely embarked them and reported their conditions to rescue authorities in Panama. "We have rescued all seven members of the crew and there is no report of any missing persons," reported Pride captain LeBlond. "We attempted to raise the boat but were unable to do so because the hook on our crane failed," the captain added.

The crew of the Pride transferred the survivors to Panamanian authorities when they arrived on May 12, 2015. The Pride, managed by Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement Cyprus, enrolled in Amver on November 22, 2000 and has earned 15 Amver participation awards.

Amver tanker saves two sailors near the Azores

The combined efforts of U.S. Coast Guard rescue personnel, Portuguese rescue authorities at MRCC Ponta Delgada and the Amver vessel Archangelos Gabriel resulted in the rescue of two sailors from a disabled sailboat approximately 500 miles south of the Azores on Wednesday, May 6, 2015.

The sailors were aboard the Manca 3 and reported via satellite phone to U.S. Coast Guard personnel they had lost steering and were in inclement weather. They initially requested an extended weather forecast. The Greek flagged Amver participating tanker Archangelos Gabriel was also diverted to assist.

The sailors reported to rescue authorities they were in 50-knot winds with waves greater than 30-feet. The sailors were placed on a two hour communications schedule and attempted to repair their steering.

The 748-foot tanker was ten hours from the distress location but the captain agreed to divert immediately and assist the crew of the Manca 3. The crew of the Manca 3 were unable to repair their sailboat and were rescued by the Archangelos Gabriel.

The Archangelos Gabriel, managed by Diamiemos Shipping Corporation of Athens, Greece, enrolled in Amver on April 6, 2005 and has earned six Amver participation awards.
